Sunny Winter Maternity Session in Kananaskis
Embracing the Beauty of a Sunny Alberta Winter With a Maternity Session in Kananaskis
As a Calgary maternity photographer, one of the greatest joys I get to experience is working with clients who return to me for their next life milestone. A recent sunny winter maternity session in the stunning Kananaskis Country was especially meaningful because I had the privilege of reconnecting with a wonderful couple I had previously met at a wedding. It was such a joy to capture this new chapter in their lives, and it reminded me why winter maternity sessions are so incredibly special.
A Full Circle Moment with a Special Couple
When Jess reached out to me for her maternity session, I was beyond thrilled. I had the pleasure of photographing her brother-in-law’s wedding a few years ago, so it was a nice surpise to hear from them and an honour that they thought of me when choosing a photographer for their maternity session. There's something so meaningful about photographing couples who you’ve seen through other significant life moments — it truly adds a layer of familiarity and connection to the session.
Our winter maternity session took place in the picturesque Kananaskis region, just outside Calgary. The mountains, snow, and crystal-clear skies created the perfect backdrop for a session that was both serene and breathtaking. They got engaged in Kananaskis a few years ago so, the opportunity to have their maternity photos taken in such a beautiful and meaningful place was the perfect way to celebrate the upcoming arrival of their little one.
Why Winter Maternity Sessions are Magical
As a Calgary maternity photographer, I always encourage clients to embrace the unique beauty of winter for their maternity sessions. While many people may shy away from colder months, Jess wasn’t scared. She got married in winter so she knew exactly what to expect with a winter maternity session. Winter offers a number of benefits that make for some of the most stunning and intimate photos you can imagine. Here's why winter maternity sessions are worth considering:
Stunning Natural Backdrops
Kananaskis and the surrounding areas are known for their snow-capped mountains, evergreen forests, and wide-open fields. Winter light in these regions is soft and diffused, making it ideal for capturing the warmth of a couple’s love in contrast with the coolness of the winter landscape. When the snow sparkles in the sunlight, it creates a magical effect in photos that simply can't be replicated in any other season.
Unique Atmosphere
Winter maternity sessions allow for a unique atmosphere that’s serene and peaceful. The quiet beauty of a snow-covered landscape brings a sense of calm to the images, highlighting the intimate nature of the moment. There's something truly special about capturing such an important milestone against a backdrop of pure, untouched snow.
Less Crowded Locations
Winter can also offer the advantage of fewer crowds. Popular spots like Kananaskis can get busy in the warmer months, but in winter, you're more likely to have the place to yourself, allowing for a more relaxed and intimate experience. This means no distractions and more time to focus on creating beautiful images with the couple.
Embrace the Season
Rather than seeing winter as a limitation, I encourage couples to embrace the season’s beauty, especially since it lasted FOREVER in Alberta. By layering up with cozy scarves, knitted hats, and elegant coats, you can still look chic and comfortable.
How to Prepare for Your Winter Maternity Session
If you're considering a winter maternity session, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure you stay comfortable and look your best:
Dress in Layers
While winter might seem chilly, it’s important to layer up with warm clothes you can easily remove when it’s time for your photos. Cozy scarves, mittens, and jackets can add a stylish touch to your photos, but you can always take them off when you want more intimate, close-up shots.
Bring Warm Drinks and Blankets
Stay warm between shots by bringing along a thermos of hot tea or cocoa. A warm blanket to snuggle under can also make for beautiful candid moments.
Choose Contrasting Colors
I recommend wearing colors that contrast beautifully with the snowy backdrop, such as deep jewel tones or rich earth tones. These colors will pop against the white snow and make you stand out.
Stay Comfortable
Remember, this session is all about celebrating this special time in your life. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes (especially if there’s snow!) and a coat you can easily take off when needed.
